About IMSUAA Europe Chapter

A Brief History of the Imo State University Alumni Association

In 1997, the Imo State University, Owerri graduated her first set of alumni, and has continued to graduate professionals, who have been found worthy in character and learning. Efforts by concerned former students of the University led by Prince Chinedu Obi to put in place an Alumni Association materialized in 2002 with the formation of the Imo State University Alumni Association, first in the FCT, which became the Steering Chapter of the Imo State University Alumni Association.

The formal motion for the setting up of the Alumni was moved by late Mr. Ononuju Onunkwo (GPD, 1999) and supported by Pastor. George Eke (Geography, 1997). Mr. Vitus Ukwuoma was appointed as the Coordinator of the Alumni in the FCT until the election of its officers a few months later.

About Board of Trustees

PIONEER BOARD OF TRUSTEES

In 2008, the Alumni was formally registered with Corporate Affairs Commission with a 7-man Board of Trustees. However, following an amendment of the Alumni Constitution in 2017, the Trustees increased to nine (9) members, having dropped one member of the Board. The following were the pioneer members of the Board of Trustees:

  • Prince Chinedu Obi - Chairman
  • Barr. Okwudili Ukaga - Secretary
  • Hon. Ernest Ibejiako - Member
  • Barr. Chukwuemeka Alisi - Member
  • Dr. Linus Okorie - Member
  • Prince Obinna Uwadoka - Member

On amendment of the Alumni Constitution in 2017, Hon Ernest Ibejiako was dropped as Board Member and three (3) other Imo Stars were added to make up a 9-member Board of Trustees as follows:

  • Prince Chinedu Obi - Chairman
  • Barr. Okwudili Ukaga - Secretary
  • Barr. Chukwuemeka Alisi - Member
  • Mazi Ugochukwu Onyejiuto Esq. - Member
  • Dr. Linus Okorie - Member
  • Prince Obinna Uwadoka - Member
  • Pastor Ugochukwu Enwereuzo - Member
  • Barr. Damian Nosike - Member
  • Emeka Leonard Achonu - Member

Chapters Of The Alumni Association

The FCT Chapter under the leadership of Prince Chinedu Obi as its first elected Chairman and Acting National President of the Alumni Association in consultation with other stakeholders set up a Steering committee for the emergence of other chapters of the Alumni as well as drafted the Alumni constitution. Subsequent moves by the Board of Trustees resulted in the creation of Imo State, Plateau State, Lagos State and Rivers State chapters of the Alumni.

The Plateau chapter was later closed down due to insecurity in the State, which forced most of its members to relocate to other States. Further steps were taken, which resulted in the creation of Enugu State and Bayelsa State chapters of the Alumni. At the international level, the North America Chapter as well as the Europe Chapter were created.

The existing Chapters, therefore, are as follows in order of their creation

  • Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter
  • Imo State Chapter
  • Lagos State Chapter
  • Rivers State Chapter
  • Enugu State Chapter
  • Bayelsa State Chapter
  • Abia State Chapter
  • North America Chapter
  • Europe Chapter
  • Ebonyi State Chapter

CHARTER CERTIFICATES

The Board issued Charter Certificates to recognized Chapters of the Association under the Seal and Authority of the Board. Charter Certificate is issued as recognition of financially up date and recognized chapter of the Alumni Association. The certificate is handed over to only elected Chairmen of the chapters and handed over to the next elected Chairman at the end of tenure. The Board may by a unanimous resolution recall the Charter Certificate of a chapter. Those of Europe, North America and Ebonyi State are still in custody of the BoT and would be handed over to the New BoT for further action.

Steering committees were set up for Akwa Ibom State Chapter and South Africa chapter. When they are set, the Board will authorize the National Executive Council to inaugurate the Chapters accordingly. More chapters of the Alumni are expected to take off in due course.

NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC)/ ACHIEVEMENTS

In December 2010, the BOT reconstituted the Imo State Chapter Steering Committee and swiftly convened as well as inaugurated the first National Executive Council meeting comprising of the Chairmen and Secretaries of the FCT, Lagos State, Plateau State, Imo State and River State Chapters of the Association. That convention elected Barr Chinwe Mbakwem as the first National President of the Imo State University Alumni Association. Conscious of the bad image of the Alumni at that time, occasioned by the incidence of the illegal collection of Alumni Development levy from graduating students by newly created Imo State Chapter, the BOT in collaboration with the National Executive Council commenced a rebranding initiative with key impactful programs and activities including the digitization of students’ academic records. Two years later, Hon. Abba Chimaraoke in the second convention of the National Executive Council was elected National President. Abba continued with the programs of his predecessor with commitment and style. As a Microsoft and SAP ICT guru, Abba propelled the digitization project by building the capacity of the University administrators, while donating several computer systems, speed scanners and ICT equipment to substantially support the realization of the digitization project. The Abba administration hosted the principal Officers of the University including the Pro- Chancellor to a stakeholders’ engagement program in Abuja. The engagement miraculously reinforced the indispensability of the Alumni Association in the University growth and stability. For once, the Alumni Association was pronounced in the University protocol.

In the next convention in December 2014, Chief Enyioha Chris Anyanwu was elected the third President of the Association. Being the first National President to serve out two terms, Enyioha’s National Executive Council virtually returned the Alumni to its owners creating what seems today, the best days of the Alumni Association. Working in tandem with the Board, Anyanwu’s NEC made the Alumni global with the setting up of chapters in Bayelsa, Enugu, North America, Europe, Abia, and Ebonyi State. During his tenure, the Alumni Association had series of mentoring activities for students of the University, our first ever star magazine was set up with an editorial board, donations of cash and materials to the University, endowments for students, entrepreneurial programs, first ever homing coming of Imo Stars, national conventions in Enugu and later River State, etc. With these impactful programs, the University authorities opened its doors wide and once again, the Alumni regained its pride of place in the University as great ambassadors.

He handed over to Prince Ferdinand Akano on 31st December 2018 as the 4th National President. On Prince Akano’s indefinite suspension by a unanimous resolution of the Board of Trustees on April 1, 2020, the Vice President, Mr. Anozie Ekwerike became the Acting National President until December 31, 2020, when Chief (Barr) Okey Ozumba was sworn as the 5th National President of the Imo State University Alumni Association

Within the lifespan of the Alumni, apart from creating existing ten (10) chapters, the association has greatly impacted on the University and its members. The Alumni had organized several programs and activities including its first ever homecoming event in 2016 as well as several give back initiatives. In the last 18 years of the Alumni Association initiative, we have been able to mobilize an army of professionals and Alumni members, who have severally synergized, networked and partnered to assist one another in several ways, especially in the welfare of its members, job assistance and giving back to the alma mater in many ways too. Of particular interest is the mobilization of friends within the Alumni to intervene in health challenges of some of our members as well as support for families of late members of the Association. The Board had approved health, life insurance and housing schemes as part of welfare support to members.

A critical and landmark achievement of the Board within the period under review, is the restoration of the name of the University from an attempt by the Ohakim led administration to rename the institution to Evan Enwerem University.

RECONSTITUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees of Imo State University Alumni Association in its 1st quarterly meeting of the year 2021, considered and approved the Convention of the 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on 17th of April 2021 at F.C.T Abuja.

Sequel to the above and in line with the Constitution of the Imo State Alumni Association, nine (9) members of the Association were nominated by the National Executive Council, ratified and approved for appointment as Chairman, Secretary and members of the new Board of Trustees of Imo State Alumni Association with effect from 26th April, 2021 by the AGM.

The new Trustees of the Board are:

  • Dr. Ebere Fortunate Uneze - Chairman;
  • Chinwe Mbakwem Esq. - Secretary;
  • Hon. Abba Chimaraoke - Member;
  • Chief Enyioha Chris Anyanwu - Member;
  • Chief (Barr.) Clovis Okereke - Member;
  • Pastor John Maduka - Member;
  • Hon. Ambrose Obioha - Member;
  • Timi, Ebitare Esq. - Member, and
  • Arc. Okwukwe Onuzo - Member.

AMENDMENT AND ADOPTION OF THE 2021 AMENDED CONSTITUTION

The 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 17th of April 2021 at F.C.T Abuja also adopted the 2021 Amended Constitution now due for filling with the Corporate Affairs Commission alongside the new members of the Board of Trustees. The Board has also maintained its obligation of paying annual returns to the CAC. It is instructive to note that the BoT members fund its activities and logistics and did not resort to any support from the NEC or the Association.

THE TASK BEFORE THE NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Following from recent and ugly development in the Alumni Association, the new Board should seek to pursue a continuous Capacity building of its leadership at all levels. Orientation and Reorientation of members on the norms and values of a body of professionals like the Alumni Association. Pursuit of inclusivity, transparency, accountability, non-partisans and integrity driven leadership of the body. Pursuit of more welfare package for members of the Association as well as remarkable give back programs and endowments in the University and for students of the University.

With focus on the ideals of the founding fathers of the Alumni Association, I see an Association with the potential in the next ten years to be first among contemporaries, throwing up men and women with the capacity to rule the world in business, industry, politics, entertainment and in all facets of human development.

Sadly, under Prince Akano, the Alumni Association deteriorated to a situation worse than eleven years ago, when it was only the body language that showed that we were not wanted, to a disgraceful point, where we have the University authorities’ displeasure expressed in writing, banning the Alumni Activities within the University. This is to say the least, a very big shame and one that should bother every right-thinking member of the Alumni. It calls for sober reflection and concerns to regain the image of the Alumni once more. Being in the news is a wonderful experience, but one should be in the news for the right reasons. Many of us were witnesses to the show of shame and rascality on the alumni platform. This was not the alumni Association of our dream. Many were witnesses to how our supposed professionals presented themselves in a manner that many wondered if these are actually IMO STARS.

The leadership and members of the Alumni Association must remain focused and strive to be the best in all that we do. Shun every temptation to derail from the founding fathers’ objectives and any attempt to divide the house. Together, we are stronger, united and productive.

CONCLUSION

On behalf of the Board, I want to sincerely appreciate the leadership and membership of the Alumni Association for the opportunity to pilot the affairs at the foundational stage of the Association and for finding us worthy to become National Patrons of the Association. We commit ourselves once more to the selfless service to our dear Association.
